This pub is one with sentimental value, as my parents frequented the pub in the 80s and my grandparents were invited to run it as publicans prior to that. It’s been a long time since the pub has had the reputation it deserves. The Rose & Crown offers great value for money, with main courses starting at £8.95. You can even enjoy a three-course meal for as little as £14.95. Maintaining a seasonal British offering will always be our USP. We’re slowly undergoing some cosmetic work while trading, and we have already launched our new children’s play area. We still have plenty more on the to-do list, so watch this space.
What’s been going on at The OHH Pub Company in 2018?
It’s been a busy year for us. We took the decision at the beginning of 2018 to move with the demanding times, while ensuring we try not to reinvent the wheel. March saw the arrival of our new development chef, Ross Harper and together, we decided we wanted our menus to focus on seasonality and British produce, while representing even better value for money. We’ve even reintroduced our daily changing specials boards throughout the group to enable us to work closer with our fishmonger and local butcher.
Given the consistency of quality brought to the kitchens with the direction of Ross, the menus are great value at just £28pp for three courses (£25pp at The Rose & Crown). We are offering optional extras, including a tipple on arrival and canapés for those that want to make it extra special. For the first time we are also offering a dish from our daily changing specials boards within the price to make the offering fresh and exciting and encourage a few more repeat visits throughout the festive period. A £25 gift voucher will be given to the organiser of any party of 12 or more to be spent in the New Year at any OHH Pub.
As a family business we recognise the importance of Christmas as a chance for families to get together. For that very reason we close our pubs on Christmas Day, with the exception of those at which the team decide to open the doors so their loyal locals can have a Christmas Day tipple.
We look forward to seeing the return of those enjoying their £25 vouchers in the New Year. 2019 will see regularly changing menus and plenty of events to keep the offering exciting. I’m also really excited to see The Rose & Crown flourish now that we finally have our teams in place and the cosmetic work near completion.
What’s your favourite festive treat and why?
It has to be Christmas Day dinner with the family. It’s the only day of the year when pubs are generally closed for business. With over 100 people on the books it’s satisfying to think that they can all enjoy some family time too, having worked so hard throughout the year.
I am really excited to see the reaction to our latest Christmas menus. Our new head chefs throughout the group have really embraced the preparations this year alongside their development chef, Ross. I also love to see the pubs in full festive swing. With decorations up and mulled wine or cider on the bars, all of the pubs provide the perfect setting for the festive period, with open fireplaces and traditional features.
